PHP 5.1 – Please Specify Your Preference

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Manoj from Product Management posted a forum post asking for your input on a fairly major decision we’re mulling over here in SugarLand.  We are considering making PHP 5.1 the minimum supported platform for Sugar, starting with Sugar 5.1. This would mean that all customers and community members running Sugar 5.1 or higher would have to move to PHP 5.1 or greater.

Please weigh in on this discussion. We’re planning on making the final decision in just a few days. Thank you in advance for your opinions!

Know Your Resources

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Did you know… if you add the following code below to your config_override.php, you will be able to how many resources it took to build a page?

$sugar_config['show_page_resources'] = true;

You’ll find this at the base of every page output:

Resources used to construct this page (queries, files)(14,156)
External cache (hits/total=ratio) local (2/26=8%)

How cool is that?

Writing and Rewriting Faster Code in Sugar

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Sometimes code just doesn’t scale.

One of my favorite tools to keep the code I am writing fast and scalable is xdebug. When I found that Zend Developer Zone did a four part series on xdebug, I felt compelled to pass it along. This article is specific to profiling code:

http://devzone.zend.com/article/2899-Profiling-PHP-Applications-With-xdebug

The above article also highlights some of the tools for analyzing cachegrind files. I’ve searched, but nothing exists to analyze cachegrind files on Mac OS X. If you know of something, post it here!

xDebug does much more than just profiling, so check it out.

4 Millionth Download!

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

We’re very happy to announce that we have passed our 4 millionth download from SugarForge.org! We had announced a contest in a previous blog, and we have combed through the entries to determine a winner. Congratulations go to Xavier Rigal, whose guess came closest to the actual date and time (which was Wednesday, January 9th, 2008 at 10:01 AM if you’re curious).

Now does anyone want to predict when we’ll hit 5 million downloads?

Patch releases coming soon

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you had a safe and fun holiday.

Sugar is getting ready to release version 5.0a, a patch release that addresses several issues in the area of emails, Module Builder, and upgrades (among others). The release should be ready in the next day or so, maybe as early as today.

We are also working on a maintenance patch for 4.5.1 for those folks who are running on that release. Look for that a little later in the month.

Coming up on 4 Million Downloads!

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

Hi all,

We’re coming up on the 4 millionth download from SugarForge.org and we’d like to invite you to guess the date and time this event will happen.

The winner will receive a lovely prize from our Marketing prize drawer (likely a coffee mug or a tee shirt or some combination of SWAG from a recent trade show).

To enter the contest, simply send an email to community-contest @ sugarcrm.com with your name, email address, and guess for the exact date and time SugarForge.org will have its 4 millionth download. The time should be expressed as Pacific Standard Time (UTC -8). The winner is the person whose entry comes closest to the actual 4 millionth download.

Sorry Sugar employees, you’re not eligible to win. You all probably have enough SugarWare anyway!

Good luck to all.
